A Career in Appraising- Be Professional

It surprised me when speaking with students, to find that many do not know how to go about looking for a job in a meaningful, productive way. In one case a student simply called an appraisal firm and ask for a job over the phone........The person from the firm asked if they knew how to do an appraisal, and the response was NO. The student said, however isn't it your job to train me when I get out of school? The person at the appraisal firm set the student straight and told her that the school training should be sufficient to perform an appraisal, and if the student isn't capable to perform an appraisal on their own, they are not a marketable commodity. The firm then told the student that they do not hire people who call and ask for a job over the phone, because it seems to suggest that appraisal jobs are easy to get and not worth very much.

If you wish to become an appraiser there are several items you must keep in mind as follows:

Most firms won't hire you over the phone, so you may wish to ask for an interview or permission to send in your resume and a sample of your work for consideration. If they say yes, then you have one foot in the door. It is then up to you if you get the job or they are seriously looking for someone.

Never lie and make yourself sound better than you are. Be honest, and be prepared. Tell them briefly about your business experience in your resume prior to becoming an appraiser. Make sure the sample appraisal you send them is free of mistakes. If it has mistakes, they will not hire you, and you have cost yourself the position with the firm.

Don't ask about money, vacations, etc. See if they offer you a position first. Why would you think about negotiating a salary if they have not made you an offer...as a trainee. Some people think because they have the interview, they have the job. This is not true. They will be interviewing you, don't attempt to interview them.  Appraisal owners don't like the roles to be reversed, since they want to work with someone who will not re-invent the wheel, but rather be a team player.

Shoes shines are always nice. When going to an interview, make sure you look the part of an executive that will be given the opportunity to make money in this field. Casual clothes are fine in class, as well as in the field, but not advised at the interview.

The Resume should be professional and perfect, and in many cases successful students have a Resume Firm create it for them. Before giving it to a potential employer have some friends look at it and get their opinion as well.

The Mock Appraisal you are showing the potential employer should be perfect. It cannot have typo's, flaws or imperfections. The employer knows you are showing this as a true sample of your work. Is the quality of your work satisfactory or unacceptable.

I hope this helps in your job search- I have found that successful people entering this field do not  take it lightly. They take the time and energy necessary to secure a position, by acting professional before, during and after the job interview.
